Video Tape Digitisation

Preserving Your Memories

Based in Datchet, Berkshire, Avernus Media is able to convert your old video tapes into digital files that you can save, share and view on any device. For more information or for a quote, please get in touch.

How Does It Work?

It's very simple!

Drop us an email to let us know how many tapes you need converting, what format they're currently in, and what extras you're after.

Then, deliver your tapes to us in Datchet, and we'll send you with an .mp4 digital file of each of your videos, which can be uploaded to YouTube and saved or shared however you want.

How Much Does It Cost?

Our basic rates can be found below. We offer a bulk discount, so the more tapes you have, the cheaper each one is!

The length of a tape, or the amount of footage on it, doesn't matter -- even if it's a 3-and-a-half hour long family epic, the price is the same!

What Sorts Of Videos Can I Digitise?

All sorts!

We're able to process any of the following formats.

VHS / S-VHS

VHS-C

Hi8 / Digital 8 / 8mm / Video 8

DVD / Mini DVD / Blu-Ray

Betamax

Micro MV

SD / Mini SD

If you don't know what format your tape is, that's not a problem -- get in touch, and we can help you out!

Most of the videos we process contain personal footage, but we can also digitise recordings taken from the TV.  What we CAN'T do, unfortunately, is digitise commercially produced VHS tapes; doing so is illegal, so we can't help you there.

What Do I Get?

For our basic package, we provide a .mp4 file of each video. This is the perfect format for uploading to YouTube or other video hosting services, and will play perfectly on computers, smart phones, smart TVs or any other hardware.

On top of that, however, we also offer a range of extras:

Extras

TITLE CARD + CLEAN UP EDIT
(+ £2 per tape)

Old videos often contain chunks of blue screen or unwatchable fuzzy lines where the tape has become damaged. Or, if you've recorded something from the TV, you might find the programme interrupted by ad breaks for products that don't even exist any more! For an extra £2, we'll clean up these elements, and provide a nice neat title card to introduce your video!

TAPE DISPOSAL

(+ £1 per tape)

If you’d like us to get rid of your tapes once they’re digitised, let us know – we’re happy to make sure they’re properly recycled.

ONLINE HOSTING
(+ £10 per tape)

Alongside the .mp4 file (which you'll still receive), for an extra £10 per tape we can upload your videos to a private, password-protected Vimeo web page, making it easy to share with friends and family... and we'll keep it there indefinitely, meaning you never have to worry about losing the file.

USB

(+ £4 per tape)

If you'd prefer a hard copy of your videos, alongside the .mp4 file, we're happy to provide a USB stick with your videos on it, keeping them safe and secure.

RETURN POSTAGE

(+ £7.50)

If you'd like to have your tapes returned to you after digitisation, and are unable to collect them yourself, we'll return them to you via tracked Royal Mail delivery for the following fee:

  • 1-5 tapes   -- £7.50
  • 6-30 tapes -- £15.00
  • 30+ tapes  -- £25.00

DONATE TO THE ARCHIVES
(15% DISCOUNT)

If you own the footage, and if you're happy to give us permission to use and sell clips from it elsewhere, you can reduce your costs by 15% across the board. Scroll down for further details.

Highlights Package

If we're honest with ourselves, we don't always want to sit through 90 minutes of amateur footage from 30 years ago... and certainly our friends and family don't.  What we often want is a highlights reel -- a 5-minute package of memories, picking out all the best bits.

That's where we come in.

For £100 per tape, we'll work with you to create a professionally edited custom highlights package, which we'll provide alongside the full digitised videos.  We can even provide a soundtrack -- just let us know the mood you're after and we'll find the perfect score to set your memories to.

What are the Avernus Media Archives?

We're glad you asked!

In addition to digitising footage, Avernus Media buys and sells archival material, providing it to museums, production companies, artists, and anyone else who wants footage that shows what life was like in the good old days (you know, before smart phones ruined everything).

If you own the copyright to the footage and are willing to give us the rights to it, then we're happy to provide a 15% discount to the digitisation cost.  The rights you provide would be non-exclusive, meaning you can still do whatever you want with the footage yourself -- you're just letting us use it as well.

Broadly speaking, you own the copyright if you took the video and it was filmed on either public property or property that you own.  If you're unsure whether you do own the copyright or not, get in touch with the details and we'll see if we can work it out!
